What is the best laptop for starting in web design?

I'll be starting courses soon and would like advice in what options /model etc. to look for in one of the Dell laptops. I've bought from Dell before and find their service is excellent. Toshiba -not so hot! Maybe you work in web design and find that your laptop is limited for it in some way ? I could learn from you and prevent that by knowing what the most attractive features are to have included. Price is a concern, starving student yada-yada

What is the best laptop for starting in web design?
for webd all u need is a basic laptop like hp/compq for exe the compaq presario m2000 256 mb ram intel pen m and 40 gig hdd for less then 500 works fine i have 2. and i use them to test outher pcs at work so its fine trust me.
Reply:You might want to get 1G ram since you might be running a lot of services to run your web application. Plus you'll most likely have many programs opened at the same time.

Also get a screen with large resolution so you can have a large work space.
Reply:just for websites the basic laptop will do. Just make sure that the programs you will use such as MacroMedia etc...max the requirments these programs need to run. A 512 mb of ram with 60Gig harddrive laptop will be fine. I would recomend a centrino laptop for its longer battery life.....for those long breaks between classes.
Reply:hey, I began mine a year ago in a Dell inspiron 1150, and it still ok , no problem. I been designed over 200 pages and found the only problem to be portability. Later on your course or after it, you may need to go to servers and workstations and companies with the laptop and do a whole lot of running. here are somethings be on the look out:

1. battery life --%26gt; must stay alive above 3 hours. For example you found a huge problem in your page and had to rebuild it on the spot. So get the 12 cell battery.

2. graphics --%26gt; dont worry about graphics card, go with a 15"1 to 17" screen but nothing more than that as this wont fit ino your bag.

3. Check for protection --%26gt; like the case it uses, ( I cracked my LCD once, had to replace)( lenovo provides the most protection)

4. sleek in design %26gt;%26gt; you may wanna look at some ACer. They are well designed for good looks and portability.
Reply:A laptop is just a portable PC with most of the optional peripherals already bult in. Reliability and weight are functional requirements you should look at. Also, keep in mind that web design is not one of the most intense uses of PC resources, so you don't need to go for the most expensive top-of-the range system. Be sure you'll be able to run some kind of image editing app, and then a web design app and the browsers you'll be designing for.

Also, make very sure of the laptop's resale value (if any) and the companies in your area that can provide you with service and repairs. Good luck.
