What is a better business name for a Web Design Company?

Currently I play in the Automotive Paint Sector and own a company called Brushless Colors. I am in the process of selling off the company, not the name, and am merging over into the Web Design sector for a career.

Currently I have Blue Ice Studio as a business name but just don't seem like I get much enthusiasm over the name when I say it to others.

Which do you like better for a Web Design Company name?

- Blue Ice Studio

- Brushless Colors

Some are just telling me to keep my original name cause it fits the web design part as well. Maybe you have another name that you think might work better....mention it if you would.

What is a better business name for a Web Design Company?
The naming of your business could be one of the most important decisions you will make. A name's originality and legal availability will create a real asset value of its own, as it becomes marketed and gains market acceptance.

The name you choose will become the focal point of all the benefits and features that relate to your business. Customers will be able to find and refer others to it in the future.

Since any names that are suggested here may already be owned by another party, I wanted to go a different route...

I suggest either hiring a name creation firm or get together with your friends and/or family and throw a "name party" %26amp; have everyone bounce some ideas around. Compile a listing of names that you like the best. Once you have that list, do as much free research as you can before you delve into comprehensive research.

I listed some links where you can do some preliminary name checking. However, please be aware that this is merely scratching the surface of what's out there.

Only comprehensive research will tell you if the name is truly available. But, these links are free %26amp; a great place to start, so I'd try them out first.

Comprehensive research consists of looking at marks that are similar in Sound, Appearance or Meaning in the pending %26amp; registered Federal AND State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files.

There are other sites that offer free searching capabilities in conjunction with their commercial services, so I'm not able to post those links due to the Yahoo! TOS. You'll also want to check domain names %26amp; yellow pages, so simply do a search for "free domain name search" and "national yellowpages" and the appropriate links will pop up.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success %26amp; happiness in all your ventures!
Reply:Do you know what blue ice is??? It's the frozen waste (that's putting it nicely) that occasionally falls out of airplanes onto people's houses. Maybe that's why people are not enthusiastic about that name.

I would just go with something like True Blue Studios.

Im thinking of starting a web design club at school. What are some things that we could do in it?

I like the sound of it since I love web design... but what are some things to do during the 40 minutes per week?

Im thinking of starting a web design club at school. What are some things that we could do in it?
See if you can do something with the school website, learn and teach the process of designing, teach languages to those that don't know, try to learn new languages, keep things updated.. I don't know. I was considering starting one too, but I haven't done any programming in a year or two.
Reply:There's tons you can do. Web design is a broad topic. You can delve into the intricacies of HTML, CSS. There's so much you can do with this it's staggering.

Then, you can incorporate JavaScript.

You can also discuss things like hosting a web site, graphic design. User interface issues.

How do I check how my Web design will look in Internet Explorer when designing with a Mac?

As you tech-savvy people know, there is no more/will be no more Internet Explorer for Mac. Is there an easy way (perhaps emulation) that I can test how my Web designs will look in IE 6/7 on my Mac?

How do I check how my Web design will look in Internet Explorer when designing with a Mac?
Yeah - if you have a computer with XP Professional you can remote desktop into it (download the RDP client from Mactopia - and you'll need an account on the XP box) - then you're essentially on a Windows box.

Or, if you have one of the new intel based macs, just install Windows XP!
Reply:Time to step up and get a Winders box.

Not only would it be handy for checking pages in IE, but you can also use it to host sites you are working on before uploading them to the real server. And it can be IIS or Apache - just like the real world.

Should I take the web design or graphic design program at school?

I want to be a web designer and build web pages, among them using flash media and all that stuff. But should I stick with web design itself or graphic design? I'm planning on going for my Associate's Degree in web design, so it'd be important if I can get some info from people who have knowledge on this profession and if you can, please try to make the advice as positive as possible :)

Should I take the web design or graphic design program at school?
You can do more in graphic design. Web is in the area of graphic communications. From graphic design you have web and print. I'm working towards a BFA in graphic design and I'm strong in web and print.
Reply:Web design is two fold.

There is a programming area, and a graphics area. You can still do both. Lean towards what you are good in, either graphics programs, or programming..... Most good web sites have a team of people working on them. Often the graphic artist and the programmer, or design person are different.
Reply:Seriously - rethink your career options - web and graphic design is over saturated as it is, the market value of a web designer is going to do nothing but go down, by the time you graduate there's going to be a glut of web designers looking for jobs that are already filled.

Anyway - got for the design, if you have any real artistic skills i's important to nurture them early on. Web design is a series of implementations of code and static facts. Actual design isn't - it requires thought, appreciation, style and skill. All of which are aided by practice.
Reply:Take graphics, Learning web design is as easy as signing up for a myspace. Take Graphics so you can know the software.

Does it matter where I get web design degree from?

I'm trying to decide where I should get a web design/programming degree from. Is it better to go to a big name school and pay extra money, or can I go to a good small school that's much cheaper? Do employers care where I get the degree from or do they just look at my portfolio?

Does it matter where I get web design degree from?
Ive done hiring for ISPs and I can say that YES it makes a difference. Many people wish it didnt but it does. Kids who say "I know as much and didnt go to college" or "universities dont teach the real stuff" might be right but thats not why corporations dont hire them. A university or college degree (or military background) shows the ability to get thru it. Its one way to weed out the smart mouthed kids that know too much on the subject and too little of what is needed to keep a job.

So yes, the same courses from a known institution does count differently. Whether its enough to justify the cost difference, Im not sure. But Im guessing that the level of the institution probably scales against the level of corporation and job you would get. In other words, to get a real salary with retirement and medical would probably need to be a real diploma
Reply:look up PCDI and no they don't care as long as you got the degree and they see it's a two year collage
Reply:If money is a problem, then check into small, cheaper schools to start with--and whose credits the big name schools will accept. That way you can transfer after you get your basics.

I would also write to some of the companies you would like to work for and ask them whether the portfolio is what counts (the kind of work you can show them that you can do) more or the name of the school counts more.

I think employers do look at school names, but mediocre work from a big name school as oppposed to excellent work from a smaller school -- that's something you'd have to ask them.

Also, as I said half and halfing it might work, to cut down on the costs some...but be sure the credits will be transferable.
Reply:Hello, no it does not make a difference. In fact if you look at most job postings in this career they list no or very low school requirements. This is one area where skill and experience/portfolio far outweighs education. It is a good idea to still get the degree but go with the cheapest big name school with the understanding that you will really need to learn the skills yourself but a big name school always looks good on a job application such as for a government job. View some various web developer/design job search links here: http://www.abouthr.com and see http://www.websiteaz.com articles section
Reply:As long you don't get it for $25 from a a shady Spammer you should be alright :D

Really it shouldn't make a difference but between an Oxford graduate and someone with an equivalent and equally valid Internet based degree from Open University, well, you just know how it is going to go...

The portfolio should naturally be taken into account too.

I'm retired but if I was running a design company the first thing I'd look at is examples of their work. If the current code is shoddy and full of typo's and spelling mistakes, well that says it all. Tight code and proper grammer like wot me mam taught me is the order of the day. *blink*

Can you list some of the best graphic/web design schools/programs are?

Thanks!

What is the best art school? I want to know what some of best schools are to study graphic/web design.?
The Art Institute of Chicago, American Academy of Art, Columbia College... All of those are in Chicago
Reply:Rhode Island School of Design is the nation's best.
Reply:I don't think you would go to an art school for web design. For graphic design yes, and I would reccamend Pratt. For web design I think that ITT Tech or some place like that has a pretty good web design program
Reply:Columbia College in Chicago, you're taught by mainly professionals, RISD in Rhode Island is pretty much the top art school, but it's very hard to get into, Any of the Art Institutes are good, Ringling School in Florida(I dont remember what city) is really good, but very intense and and small, you would have to love doing graphics most of the day. Kansas City also has a great art school, pretty sure its called Kanas City Art Institute or something.

How do I get business for my web design firm?

I just started my web design firm, www.tripleidesigns.com, and want to find out the best way to get business. Should I give away services or hand out coupons? Perhaps those are bad ideas, but I don't know where to start. Any ideas? (Please only respond if you are being serious.)

How do I get business for my web design firm?
Handing out coupons is not an effective way to market your site -- it's more of a shotgun approach to marketing where you simply hand out coupons for the heck of it even if the person that gets your coupon is not interested in getting a website done.

You need to adopt a rifle approach so you can target precisely those who are most likely to be interested in getting your services. To do this, you first need to identify who your target audiences are, and then and only then should you start figuring out how to market to them.

For example

TARGET AUDIENCE: Small and home-based business owners

Marketing approaches:

1. Get a list of small businesses in your locality and then contact them through direct mail or call them

2. Put up a website and get your site visible to sites that attract small and home-based business owners. You can write articles on how important it is to have a good website, how you can create a great website, how sales is dependent on having a website that works.

3. Network, network and network. Attend chamber of commerce meetings, or even Meetup.com's small business owners and home business owners groups -- these places are filled with your target market. Get to know them, introduce yourself to them and let them know that you are available to create their websites.

Do the same exercise for other target audiences you have in mind.

Giving away free services is also a good approach, if managed carefully. For example, my site attracts a huge small/home business audience and we previously worked with a web design firm. It's a tit-for-tat arrangement whereby they do some design stuff for us and we give them free promotion on our site -- and we've actually given them quite a number of customers.

If you are going to give away free services, be sure to balance out what you can get out of the deal vis-a-vis the other party. But definitely, collaborating with key strategic partners can help you find clients for your business.
Reply:Small Business Marketing Strategy: Target the up-and-coming search engines

While Google still rules the roost when it comes to Internet search engines, and Yahoo is firmly entrenched in second spot, a number of new start-ups are hoping to give them a run for their money. And a good small business marketing strategy would be to check them out and see how you can make them work for your site!

Some of the new up-and-comers include:

Powerset (www.powerset.com): A "natural language" search engine

Hakia (www.hakia.com): A "meaning-based" search engine

Wikia(www.wikia.com): A "community-based" search engine

ChaCha(www.chacha.com): A "social networking-based" search engine

Snap (www.snap.com): A search engine that offers visual previews

It's a smart small business marketing strategy to continue optimizing for the Google, Yahoo, and MSN search engines as they are by far and away the most popular -- but niche search engines could provide new opportunities to reach your market. Be sure to check them out!
Reply:There's local business and world-wide business.

I like the Web for world-wide business.

I made a video about how my own service business attracts free world-wide traffic. I'll put the YouTube url below.

I'm including another link to another video that explains the best way to attract this traffic. The video you will see is only 3 minutes, but at the bottom of that screen are links to other resources. The second one is to a 30 minute video. It's very good.

Which are the best home study (ie online) Web Design courses?

I'm thinking of pursuing a new career in Web Design and would like to be able to take a course at home, at my own pace and eventually receive an industry-recognised qualification at the end of it that will enable me to jump start my new career.

But there are a lot of options when it comes to home study courses, and many are not so cheap. Which ones are the best value and offer the most qualifications that are needed in today's industry?

Many thanks.

Which are the best home study (ie online) Web Design courses?
The Home Learning College run courses in web design. You learn about coding, the software and design principles and practices. Prices include course materials and the software.

Have you checked out your local colleges? They might run short part-time courses on web design or a related-subject. There's loads of books out there that can teach you as well.

Easiest way to design a full web site?

I don't like web design, but I can't seem to avoid it, unless I want to pay someone else a ton of money to do it for me. It's just so complicated and confusing. What's the easiest way for a dope to create a website? Not just the front page, but additional pages as well.

Easiest way to design a full web site?
You must know HTML; it is a web scripting language. If you want to learn HTML visit www.w3schools.com Then you write your code and save them in your computer and then you have to buy a domain like www.yourname.com and also a server space to upload and save your file(s) in there internet.

There are many free hosting services available on internet. But no free domain name registrars. (visit www.blazonhosting.com and check the prices. It is about US$9 -10)

Reply:If you are just trying to get a grip on web designing then i suggest you take a look at a few existing sites that have similar quantity of content like the web site you are designing.

Choose one of them and take a screenshot of it by hitting Print Screen(PrtScr) on your keyboard. Its somewhere next to the F12 key on your keyboard assuming you are not on a laptop.

Now open Photoshop and Ctrl+N. Leave the settings as it is and click OK.

Then Ctrl+V

You have the site that you want to use as inspiration on the canvass.

Before assuming that I m asking you to copy a site straight off, please understand I m just suggesting you a technique that subconsciously helps you into creating your own well designed sites.

In this case we ll only use the layout AS IT IS. So if you are using a site like www.yahoo.com then you d only take the layout as a layout for your site. Which means, you will have a wide header under which there are 3 columns with

-the first one for the vertical list of menus like 360 degrees, Answers, Autos, Chat etc.

-second for tabbed content

-and third for interactive menus for Mail Messenger Radio etc.

These 3 columns are followed by the footer area for more links and copyright statement.

Now what YOU do is:

1. Ctrl+R (activates the rulers)

2. Press V on your keyboard to activate the Select tool

3. Drag out guides from the ruler to the canvas and divide the canvass based on the image we grabbed from Yahoo

4. Now your guides should be having clearly divided areas.

5. Create new layers for every section of the division (Header, 3 Column and Footer

6. The content of these new layers should be stuff that YOU make, remembering to put text where there was text in the screenshot and images or buttons where there were buttons in the screenshot.

7. The images you put there, which include, the logo, the buttons and the pictures, should be YOURS, they should cover the Yahoo screenshot.

8. Now if u make the Yahoo screenshot invisible, you can only see your stuff. Believe it or not, IT WILL LOOK GOOD and WONT LOOK LIKE YAHOO.

Why? Because you used a layout of a site which was carefully designed. You put your own graphics and images. There are many sites that teach u to make buttons which is easy to find.

Just to make the above site a bit more better. Take an image from your hard drive(any good image that you like for its colors) and take some time to select its main colors. Note them down and maybe have 3 to 4 main colors from your fav image and use these 3 to 4 colors ONLY to create the color combination for your site.

The example I mention here is not asking you to RIP OFF a site, its just suggesting you to take the layout of the site. If you substitute Yahoo with some other better designed site, the results will be awesome and the site wont look the same as the colors AND the images and logo will be DIFFERENT.

All this will help you understand that the layout of a site is possibly one of the greatest contributor to a wonderfully designed website. As you move on making sites like this, you ll have a subconscious understanding of great layouts and then you wont need screenshots.

The site that you use as a guide for your own design will also provide a guide to the rest of the pages.
Reply:http://www.doggydomains.com has a package called website tonight that lets you create a website without all the programming. I think it's like $6 a month and includes hosting.

Which applicant should I hire for graphic/web design position?

This position is for a non-profit, human services organization to design logos, brochures, wedding materials, websites, etc for other non-profit organizations and our in-house programs. I have narrowed down the position to 2 people and I am having a really hard time deciding between them. One has excellent graphic design skills and creative ideas, but little web design knowledge. The other has the web knowledge and can code HTML and such, but doesn't have strong and quality graphics. The graphic designer is willing to learn whatever it takes, but I have projects piling up. I would love to hire both, but that is not an option. Who would you recommend? Thanks.

Which applicant should I hire for graphic/web design position?
My brethren would kill me but...

Hire the Graphics Person. Basic web design is simple and can be learned in a few months with patience. Graphics have to be the most difficult part of web design and you need someone who is more of a jack of all trades.
Reply:i think you can contact a expert webdesigner at website like

http://webdesign.hyparoffice.com/
Reply:Graphics Designer..since ur position sounds like it is truely for "advertisement" type of purposes..a graphic designer will be very handy. They can learn to code but like poolmanjim said it'll take time and patience with them. And yes this is coming from myself as a software/website programmer. Graphics Designer hands down :)
Reply:Speaking as a graphic designer with little web design experience, there are PLENTY of tools out there to help him/her with learning web design. The most important thing is to have quality graphics - if the candidate who can code cannot design, you'll be up a creek, but if the candidate with the excellent design skills doesn't know much about web design, that can be fixed. Hire that designer!

I want to work in web design NOT development?

I went to uni and graduated with a computer science degree. In those three years, two were spent specialising in web design. My problem is that my first job out of uni was in development, based on a few of my skills. Now my second job is also in that area but I have always struggled with development- I cannot seem to get my head around programming. I love designing but don't even have a portfolio. I have now been moved to specialise in databases and SQL but that's not where I want to be. I would change but the salary offered will be so much less than what I'm on currently and wouldn't be able to cope with all of my personal responsibilities...

What can I do? I don't want to be stuck here because I have no choice cos it makes me unhappy every day but can't move due to my inexperience etc...

Any genuine suggestions will be very much appreciated.

I want to work in web design NOT development?
Hmmmmm.... I'm only 14 so I don't know about University much. But I'm doing something in school called OCR which has many things based on Web Design. Another thing is also DiDa.

Try OCR National. They do Web Design.
Reply:It's no fun to be in a job you don't like. In fact it's almost not worth it. But....sometimes you have to do what you have to do to pay the bills. If the move to design is too much of a pay cut, try looking in the job market for something similar - maybe you'll get lucky and find one that pays better. If you can do the database/SQL job pretty well, then use that to your advantage to tailor your resume for design, i.e. maybe use skills from being a database expert and relate those to how it would make you a GREAT design person.

I had a nice job making decent money for a while and then they cut my position to cut costs. I had to take a $13K cut in pay and I hated my new job, but I stuck with it for a couple years and other things opened up in that company, so I was able to get out of the crappy job and into something I liked. Then I got tired of doing that but used those skills to get an even better job back at the same pay level I originally was but doing something totally different - and now I like my job. Stick with it, suck it up, get some experience under your belt, then polish your resume.
Reply:I don't think a company can afford to hire both a web developer AND a web designer. I work as a web developer but I'm constantly made to do the design aspects as well.

Another thing you could try, if you like design that much, is to work for an advertising company or one that specializes in marketing. For those presentation is very important.

However I don't think there is a job where you can completely separate being a web developer from a web designer.

@Luke: HTML is not a programming language. It's a markup language, yes there's a huge difference between the two.
Reply:This is actually a very good point. The line between developer and designer is really blurred these days, to the point where most people imply one from the other. I am the complete opposite of you - I love developing, but cannot design for crap.

Basically, my suggestion is to find a few non-profit organizations or clubs that desperately need a web face-lift, so you can build a portfolio. You'll only need to do a couple so you can at least have examples of your work. Then you want to search job openings for a web designer specifically, and read the descriptions carefully - unfortunately the majority of people out there don't actually know the difference between a designer and a developer (some people even believe HTML is a programming language...go figure).

I need to gain clients for my web-design firm. Do you have any suggestions. I pay people $25-$100 every time they get me a client.

How Can I gain clients for a Web-Design.?
Try with re-design proposals. look around, choose some website in a need of re design, make a brief proposal to the company with an outline on what you can do to make their site more usable, secure, dynamic, attractive and etc. Be ready with your projects portfolio.

Also, elance.com is on line marketplace for people/companies who search free lance professional web design (and other services in that matter). However, i think that the first option is more viable cause you do the offer to your potential clients and avoid competing with he thousands other free lance designers.

Good luck
Reply:You can have a look at guru.com , freelancers.com etc there are several of them on the interent.

I have a good article on setting up a design company that has some good ideas: http://www.articleshut.com/index.php?pag...
Reply:If you pay 25-100 each referral, what happens if the client's budget is small? You might end up losing money. Try the freelance web deisgn sites. You list your skills and clients find you through them. Some sites are free and some are not.
Reply:Hi Drez,

There's several freelanceing websites on the net. If you send me your email address i'll send you the link to the best one.

If i am 15 and i want to take a course in proffesional web design where can I do that?

will a local college like ITT tech let me take a course. I don't care about the credits just to gain knowledge of how to design a web page.thanks so much

oh and if so who do i talk to?

If i am 15 and i want to take a course in proffesional web design where can I do that?
You might need to wait until your 18
Reply:Personally, I would save your money and learn it on your own.

You don't have to go to school for it or take web design classes. You can save yourself a lot of money by learning the technologies on your own from free web tutorials or buying a few choice technology books. Many courses, especially in academic environments are taught by people who don't have the talent or know how to land great web design jobs. They are simply self-appointed "gurus" because they are the only ones in their academic circles who know some HTML.

Good luck.
Reply:If there is a local art college, many of them allow high school students to take summer classes. Or try looking at community centers or colleges with continuing education courses.
Reply:Try a community education catalog for the class. It doesn't give you the credit but the skill at a lower price and likely at a time that won't interfere with your school work.

Should I use a salesperson to find clients for my web design business?

The salesperson would be responsible for going around town visiting with clients and trying to sell them a website made exclusively for them. The salesperson would also be responsible for keeping the client informed about the progress of his project as well as receiving instructions for possible modifications to design.

Has anybody used a salesperson for a web design business?

Should I use one?? Any cons??

Presumably you pay only for resulting sales.

Whats the best way to set up selling web design from home?

Im a fireman and I have 4 days off a week and need something to do, as I have great knowledge in web design and computing from 3 years at uni and doing a few for my footy teams I thought designing web sites would be the best thing for me. Any help with how to get started?

Whats the best way to set up selling web design from home?
As a commercial web developer of over 10 years (Christ that sounds pompous!) I do have one or two suggestions; which are probably worth precisely what you're paying for them!

DON'T buy Front Page, you will never be taken seriously if you try to operate commercially using this program. I would advise you to go for Macromedia dreamweaver or even better Studio 8 (which has a whole suite of development programs in it).

Work out what your development process is, try to develop a set of procedures. What are the stages from when the customer contacts you to when you deliver to them? You are going to make mistakes (trust me on this) but gradually if you refine the process it will get better.

Customers are an absolute pain in the **** (honest). NAIL them down to exactly what you are going to produce for them. How many pages, who will supply images, site content, how will these be provided (are you expected to type in the information - fine for smaller sites but what if there are 30 or 40 pages). Customers will always try to add as the site progresses. My advice is to always be accommodating to quote extra for anything not in the specification. Even small sites can avalanche into time hungry monsters and as a web developer time in a very real sense is money.

Find a good hosting service, customers will often want web space and domain name registration (try http://www.123reg.co.uk).

Talk to customers, listen to what they want try to get your head into what they are trying to achieve and design to meet this. Be clear and honest with them. If they want to include a graphic and you don't think it looks good, tell them; they are employing your skills and expertise.

Put yourself in the visitors to the websites shoes. Is the site easy to navigate? Are the links always in the same place (not jumping about). Is the most sought after information on the first place / easily accessible?

Finally learn HTML. Don't rely on WYSIWYG editors to do all the coding. Sometimes you need to dip into the code and change it to make it work properly. HTML is not hard to learn there are plenty of on-line tutorials. It will pay handsome dividends in the future.

Hope this helps

There are two nice websites that you can search for consultant and freelance jobs, that may have jobs in your area. A lot of these jobs you could do from home if you have a fast internet connection. They are:

If you're learning straight HTML and CSS, any cheapo unit with a text editor will do. Get the best deal at Dell.

In SEO field content of the website is the king of the success of the website. Link bait is also a good strategy to follow which the purpose is to attract visitors and make your website as good resources. Link bait is done creating some free, good resources and well informative.
Reply:Basically make the web site useful. Looking nice and beautiful is not so important.

Understand why people would visit web site and make it simple for them to get the job done.

Also, think about what you want to represent. Is website meant to be fun, serious, corporate etc. Use colours and icons that reflect this (but usually a white background is the way to go).

Try a book called The Non-designers web design book by Robin Williams.

What book is recommended for learning web design?
Try your local library - the books are free! I like the "Dummies" series of books.

I liked "CSS: The missing manual". Search it on Amazon.
Reply:I will recommend you to learn HTML, JavaScript, DHTML etc online first then go about purchasing a book for your specific requirement. A very interactive URL for this is www.w3schools.com
Reply:If it was me, I would go to a used bookstore that deals in collage text books and see if i could find a book in introduction to web design.

Sometimes they have ones from alternate collages like academy of learning or tech schools.

School text books have a good step by step learning for any thing they teach
Reply:(X)HTML %26amp; CSS is absolutely the way to go... Once you get beyond the basics, you should definitively get your hands on "CSS Mastery" (Cameron Moll, Andy Budd, Simon Collison)..

Best place to find freelance web design work quick? I need some fast cash ($100 or more in a week)?

I'm in need of some fast cash to help a friend out and I have about a week to get it. I'm needing about $100-$200 (the more the better) and since I know how to design websites, I was thinking of finding freelance web design work. The prob is, I've never been able to find good paying freelance work as too many people will do the work for free or near free just to get their portfolio filled. I need the money so I'm asking here in hopes someone knows a good place to get some paying work in freelance web design.

I have done many websites and can provide proof if needed.

Best place to find freelance web design work quick? I need some fast cash ($100 or more in a week)?
The first place to go for quick turn around capitol is your own personal network. Who do you know - family and friends- who stand to benefit from a website...they don't necessarily have to have a business...(As an example, an Aunt, who is completely Internet phobic would love a website to share photos and videos of her kids with the family and friends.)

Next option, you have to market yourself. Get out there and pound the pavement...but first do the research. Check out the web for info about businesses in your area who you feel could benefit from a web presence. If you can't find them on line, pay them a visit and let them know what you can do for them. Two great places to use as a resource for these folks is local radio and local print (news papers.) They're already advertising, so they're interested in spending money to market themselves. Then, if they don't have a website, stop in and let them know how you can make their marketing plan better - with a website.

Good Luck!
Reply:Hi.

Quick, huh? Alright, if i was in your position I would search out the freelance websites. Many are looking for writers, but some are looking for programers and designers. But be prepared to bid on jobs. You will be competing against other designers.

Google "freelance programmer" or "freelance designer". You can also check out http://www.data-entry-jobs.net . They have a lot of online jobs, and sometimes good designer ones come up.

New Web Design / Developer Business - How to get clients?
Advertise. You need to put an ad in the local classified newspaper (Greensheet, Pennysaver, etc...). If you are truly serious get a phone number in the yellow pages.

You may start by doing some work for free. See if your church or local nonprofit organization has a website or needs updates to it. You can use them as a reference when you get your first client. Most people want to see a sample of your work before they hire you.

What's the best inexpensive laptop for web design?

My husband is attending school for web design and wants us to buy a new laptop because the ones we have are both very old and close to being unusable. How to check out WEB SITE DESIGN in multiple browsers and systems? Webmasters?

So I've been doing web design for a couple years, and a main problem is making sure the site shows up the same (or relevantly the same) in all browsers and systems. I know some of them are very different. So my question is to you web masters out there with this experience, how do you go about this? what is your process of making sure your site comes out clean in all browsers/systems?

Thanks in advance.

How to check out WEB SITE DESIGN in multiple browsers and systems? Webmasters?
That's a great question! It's nice to see a web designer who cares about his work.

Well the 1st thing you should do is download the following browsers on to your computer: Firefox/Mozilla, IE, Opera %26amp; Safari. These browsers represent at least 90% of the internet. Having all these browsers on your computer will allow you to check your progress while designing, so you don't get to far into a design/feature of a website that doesn't look good or doesn't work in one of these. The next best thing you can do is to make sure you design your websites to be XHTML %26amp; CSS compliant (visit www.w3c.org for details and to validate) using software such as Adobe Dreamweaver or Microsoft Expression. This will help with cross-browser compatibility also.

Good luck on all your future design projects!

Which is a better degree for a web design career?

Graphics design or managing information systems? Obviously graphics design leaves the door open for many art related computer careers and obviously managing information systems leads the door open for webmaster, database systems analysis, and management careers. But I don't know which one is particular best for web design.

Please don't say it depends on whether or not I like the design aspect more or the management aspect. Of course, I like the design aspect more - who wouldn't? But everyone tells me the management route is better (in our business based society I suppose) %26amp; the college I'm currently going to has that program... so it's an easier transition. But I do hate having to take all the prereq business courses for that program...

Also, I can't pick both - the institutions I'm looking at have one or the other.

Which is a better degree for a web design career?
Just go with computer science masters you can get really good jobs and make a decent living. Web design is only good if you have a lot of connections because its hard to find a job that pays well. After you complete the site, they let you go.

What are some good sites that give good Web design tips and show the current design trends?

I just submitted a client of mines site for review and the result wasn't what I expected. I'd like to learn what are the most common design standards now and what's your opinion about keeping individuality in your site design? With me, I dont want to make my sites like everyone else, but I don't want my designs to fail to the viewer either. Here are a few samples:

Where might I learn these common web dev standards?

What are some good sites that give good Web design tips and show the current design trends?
The newest web authring standards are valid XHTML 1.1 and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). It is possible to creating very clean and appealing websites in CSS without relying on graphics, such as border styles, gradients, rounded corners, etc...

As far as the coding goes, your websites shoud be tableless design layouts with all formatting inside an external CSS file. Take a look at these websites for some ideas and current trends.

www.cssdrive.com

www.thebestdesigns.com

If you need a good tableless design layout, take a look at the source code of my website, I don't have a lot of graphics, its clean and it validates as Valid XHTML 1.1 and Valid CSS.

www.insightstyle.com
Reply:CSS is for robots, what you need is to spend more time on what is pleasing to the eye whether it's text or graphics, Flash would be the best tool to learn, there are a million sites designed with flash just have to check them out and you'll form your own ideas. Simple is always better, less colors, less fonts, less font size changes, etc.
Reply:Most site's today are moving away from graphics heavy / table heavy designs (like http://comeliveinpanama.com/ ) to lighter , graphically neat css based designs.

The trend is to move heavy (lots of slices and images) old style based table designs to cleaner modern standards CSS designs. CSS based designs are more efficient at using a modern browsers capabilites, they make it easier to modify the site look and feel, they download and render faster, and are much friendlier for site indexing by search engines. Most major sites have already changed all or large parts of their web sites to css based designs.. (cnn.com , microsoft.com/vista , slashdot.org etc)

Here are some site's with graphics design ideas.

Free css-styled designs

Graphics design is just that, it's about being creative, having a polished clean feel. There's some amount of inate talent needed but you can gleen most of what you need by mimicing other successfuly works.

Web design?

Could anyone point me in the right direction regarding web design? I'm trying to understand storyboard process in which I want to present a fictitious web-site (for a job I am wanting) in the hope of making the right impression %26amp; am hoping to present a basic storyboard plan to gain a chance of presenting/conducting myself professionally.

I have read certain articles on www but simply don't know where to begin. I'm trying to plan for storyboarding information for approx 4 holidays that potential customers would enjoy reading %26amp; I'm lost in how to present my button details %26amp; font types, size, pixels etc. Thanks in advance guys %26amp; girls.

Web design?
Depending on your support for web design and development at the new job, I would limit your content and headings to the system fonts that normally come stock with every computer: Arial, Helvetica, Times/Times New Roman, Georgia, Verdana.

Use pixels for measurement and sizing in your flat/graphic design compositions. Be mindful of your graphical resolution - 72dpi is standard for screen/web.

Checkout tutorial websites like http://www.tutorialized.com for web design, web, 2.0 and Photoshop tutorials to get a quick run-through of how to create common effects (if that's what you're going for).

Think about who the target audience is as well. This will help with determining just how large or small you should make your text, as well as how wide you can make the design.

Most people like a medium size font on the web today, but an older audience may appreciate larger text. With regards to width, screen resolution of your audience may eventually affect how the final product will be displayed to users -- if it is too wide, portions of the design will be off screen.

Incorporate these items into your work and be sure to explain your design choices to your interviewers. They should appreciate your attention to detail and the thought you put into making the design for the user/customer.
Reply:Usually, when I create storyboards, I actually do mock-ups of the web pages in fireworks. I use fireworks instead of photoshop because quick simple changes are faster and easier to do. Plus you don't need high quality results for a storyboard or mock-up. So, I make exact replicas of what I envision each page (if it's a small site) or each type of page (if it's a big site) will look like. That way, you can represent everything to proportion as you feel it should look and it gives the client an idea of how the final product will look.

Is it possible to design a web site in Dreamweaver and write coding in Visudio Studio 2005? I perfer to use Dreamweaver for design as I am comfortable with it. For me, VS 2005 is a perfect tool to code a program. Can I design a site in Dreamweaver and import them to Visual Studio? Is there any problem if I develope web site that way? Thank you for your help.

Web Design?
Absolutely, that's exactly how I do ASP.NET sites: Get the design together in DreamWeaver, do the code in VS.

If you are going to use master pages / themes, there will be some reconstruction of the proper files between the two programs, but it works fine.
Reply:It depends on your scripting language of choice, but certainly you can edit your code in an outside source, and even configure Dreamweaver to be aware of it. I use ActiveState Komodo for anything PHP-related, for example. Report It

Reply:After you design your pages in Dreamweaver, save them to a folder. Then open them in Visual Studio 2005, as long as they are standard webpages (.htm, .js, .css, .asp, .aspx) and not Dreamweaver template pages (.dwt) you should be fine.

I Hope this answers your question!

Can I realistically get a web design job based off of my current experience?

Please take a look at my portfolio and resume and gauge whether or not I could get hired at a web design firm:

http://hirejaggers.com

What can I do to make my website more hireable?

I am still learning flash, JavaScript, and CGI scripting...but are these ABSOLUTELY necessary to get hired?

Please only serious critiques.

Can I realistically get a web design job based off of my current experience?
the definitions thing was a little confusing. You should at least move that to the bottom. The link for your portfolio, since it has a black background in a box...looks a little like a banner advertisement so my brain was preprogrammed to ignore it and it took a while for me to click on it. Try using a grid layout with small squares and links to all of your sites. Grids always work! It worked or your customers site. Or something like this if you don't have as many:

http://www.finerdesign.com/web_design_po...

Your design scheme is very professional. You just need to take out the caps, as they can be distracting. Center or spread out your links cause they seem a little scrunched to the left. Maybe add just a little animation just to prove that you can.

Its surely good enough that you can make yourself a business card with hirejaggers.com on it, and do some prospecting for small businesses who will need simple sites for cheap so you can build up your portfolio. Good Luck!
Reply:On your site I find this: "This site was designed to promote the hiring of Jonathon Jaggers for either your next website or your existing company."

This leads me to a question "What have you done to promote your site" I don't see any meta tags on your site and the title of your site is hirejaggers. Well, seriously if I am looking to hire a web design professional I would not search using hirejaggers as a keyword. Use your skills etc as searchable keywords in page title and description. And secondly I would prefer giving more information/summary about myself on the first page itself rather thank asking the user to download my resume and then view it. Just a few points I thought would be more useful, my personal choice, not criticism. I can suggest more if you like.

What is the best way to build a customer base for an dynamic web design company?

I have vested intrest in a year old web design company. My problem is this, whats the most effective way to get the word out about this company with out resorting to sale reps. and cold calling? No freelance websites, a client gets what they pay for with those sites. Any suggestion would help, I'm open to any suggestion!

What is the best way to build a customer base for an dynamic web design company?
This seems more a question for a possible marketing section (I don't know if such a thing exists though), but I think an option you should try would be to set up a few small versatile websites, and try to sell those. Now this may be an impossible task, since I don't exactly know what dynamic entails. Do you mean sites where people interact with the site, using more then basic HTML, or a site where databases and such are used, much like this one? However, if you can do it, and do, I hope it works out for the best.
Reply:Get listed on the directory sites like www.freelancedesigners.com www.marketingtool.com www.designfirms.org - just google web design directory and you will find more - getting found in search results is the primary way we get business.

also you can get new clients fast from sites like http://www.designquote.net/ which dont work like those freelance sites - it ues all closed bidding with limited amounts of bids so your not just trying to outbid the next guy

google, yahoo and msn all offer pay-per-click which can be very effective but also very expensive depending on the competition in your market -

I would invest in SEO for your site
Reply:Ok, I would get the site out on some search engines ( it might take some dough $$),

Then script a cool little pay button on the site, for each template.

Then I would have it that when they pay it brings them to the download side of the site, and it (auto-opens) a window that triggers a download window of the .zip folder with all the template stuff.

What process has to undergo in order to make a web design company?

I am very talented with art and computers and make very good websites. I have decided that i should start earning money for my work (however i'm only 15). So how do i start in creating a web design business

What process has to undergo in order to make a web design company?
One of the minimum legal requirements for all businesses is that the company owner / creater is of legal adult age, which you are not, however you can legally contract your services out by freelance as a self employed minor, given that you do not need to have a separate legal entity (company) to work self employed. The first and most important thing to all business ventures is to establish an income, and keep cashflow coming in as greater in volume than the cashflow going out. If one of these fails, you end up in debt and can spend your life climbing out. In order to establish income, you must have people paying you, in exchange for goods or services, in your case web design. Web design clients can be aquired by advertising your services as available to the public, particularly targeting your audience, namely people who either do not have a web page, or have an old, pathetic web page. One way to advertise for free is to create a really good (your best ever) web page, and send a link in an email to organisation email addresses. This is called SPAM, and there are some laws against it, but it is so accepted in todays society that unless you SPAM the antiSPAM squad at the police department, with your name, address and phone number on the email, your probably going to be ok. you can also buy bulk (1000s) of current email addys for $10 on the net, but I suggest you use PayPal or something.

Remember, the less of your income you spend on yourself, the more you can spend on increasing the amount you make in any given period, so be smart about where you apply your capital, and you could be the next Bill Gates in 20 years easy.
Reply:Doesn't matter the age you are..You've got 12 and 13 year old kids online with their own web design business..

If you are doing business online the person has no idea of who you are..If they do..They'll be surprised to know that you are 15 years old. They only thing they want to know is can you acutally deliver what you say you can and if the prices are good. Web design on line is very competivtive. Especially compared to the guys over in India..

What you can do..is design a website with your work, services and prices listed on it if you like. When a potential clients visits..that's interested. Have them to fill out a quote request form. Make sure you have that on your website. This should allow them to include information about what type of site they want, how many products they wanted listed on their site, etc. You get the point. This will help you know how much to charge them.

The challenge is..getting visitors to your site. You'll need to advertise on line. By using google, overture which are the main two search engines.. Which are used by using certain keywords to get visitors to your site. Please know just because you have a site up doesn't mean traffic will come. You'll need to advertise.

If you don't have the money for that or your parents aren't willing to help you out getting started. Think of creative ways to generate business around your area. Pass out some fliers or post card with some of your sample work on it. If you are good as you say you are, there will be businesses that doesn't mind paying you for the work.

I say..if you have a cell phone..use it for your business.

Be sure to get mom and dad to help you out with setting up a business account..Think of a business name, get a business license, and perhaps a paypal account for those that chose to pay by paypal. Being young by having a paypal account you won't need to get a merchant account which allows you to accept credit card payments from clients..The paypal account will be good enough for you.

There's also a few websites that you can listed you services on there. It's very competitive with other designers.

Web design?

I would like to know where i can find a good and cost effective web design company to design my business website? thank you.

Web design?
You can try using a site like Elance.com. You just post the project (describe what you need) and then web designers can "bid" to win your project. The prices are competitive since they want to get the project instead of the other designers.

No matter who you hire, be sure to look carefully over their portfolio and reviews (in this case, both are available on Elance).
Reply:If you have the time you can just use Dreamweaver to do it yourself. Try learning HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP. Then you should be all set to build your website!

Or you can check out my website on google. Report It

Reply:I can do it and have results tomorrow if you have images and text. ferdievansteen@yahoo. using yahoo. And in google you will be one of the first choices when someone googles you. Talk to me. See tranzenmusic.com. one of my sites
Reply:well their is an infinite amount of company's that do a great job. i cannot recommend any since i build my own sites. but google it and im sure you can decide if you would like to use them. look at their own site, look at the small things, look closely. good luck.
Reply:You can find many freelance web designers at websites like http://getafreelnacer.com/

What is this called in web design regarding a link that opens a text box under it when you click on it?

I want to do a web design project where I am making a library of multimedia material. My idea is that when someone is interested in something on the menu, they can click once on the title and then a little box opens up below it with a description. Within the box along with the description is yet another link where they can click to read the item or play the item (if it is an mp3 or video). Then if they click the main link again the little box closes up and they are free to choose another title. I have seen this before but do not know what it is called. Can you help me? Thank you.

What is this called in web design regarding a link that opens a text box under it when you click on it?
I'm afraid this is not a very easy thing to make. You have to create a layer (in Dreamweaver this is Insert -%26gt; Layout Objects Layer) and then manipulate its visibility property through some JavaScript coding. Below I give an example (hope it works):

Step 1: When you create such a layer, the following code will appear:

%26lt;div id="Layer1"%26gt;%26lt;/div%26gt;

Also, the Layer1 will appear in the Layers panel group. Between starting and ending tags, insert code to look like the following:

%26lt;div id="Layer1"%26gt;This is some text that describes the best possible way the features of what you've just clicked. For more details %26lt;a href="page23.html"%26gt;click here%26lt;/a%26gt;%26lt;/div%26gt;

Step 2: In the head section, insert the following:

%26lt;script type="text/javascript"%26gt;

%26lt;!--

function ShowOrHide(theObj){

var visObj=document.getElementById(theObj)

visObj.style.visibility=(visObj.style.vi...

}

// --%26gt;

%26lt;/script%26gt;

Step 3: In the link you want the user to click to open the layer, put the following attribute:

href="javascript:ShowOrHide('Layer1')"

Work on it a little bit. If this doesn't work, consult my sources.
Reply:You could do this by using flash or Ajax or combining them.

Ajax would be used to show and hide the window without the entire page needing to be refreshed. You could play the media content in the window using flash. Check out istock and see how implement something similar.
Reply:I know what you mean - I did something very similar a while ago.

I used drop down menus (select). Clicking on each selection would send a query to the server and a set of results (hyperlinks) would appear in a separate frame in the same page. The hyperlinks contained the description rather than the URL using standard

%26lt;a href=link%26gt;description%26lt;/a%26gt; . Users could then choose to click on the results (which were hyperlinks) to play embedded videos and any media corresponding to the link which appeared in another frame next to the results pane.

If you are interested , I can edit this post and send you code snippets so you can try it out - it's really not that different to what you want - just select instead of menu - you can modify this no problem, I think.

Suggestions about building an advanced web design course?

I need suggestions for an advanced web design course that will be implemented for a college course. Some examples are divs and CSS layouts, creating a blog, image gallery or simple ecommerce site. This course is targeted for designers in mind, without or little programming experience. Any of your suggestions is very much appreciated.

Suggestions about building an advanced web design course?
Start at the beginning! Make sure they understand the internet and it's standards. You would not believe the number of people who fail to grasp the standard box model. And how many people can't differentiate tag markup and programming.

Also be sure to cover the use of tools and modules. There are many great software sites out there that require very little modification for many projects, but many first time developers want to create from scratch costing more money and causing more trouble than it's worth.

Also, you might introduce planning. There are many developers out there that try to create a website only to realize that the client didn't want xyz, but abc. Proper planning and documentation can save thousands of dollars and hours of wasted work.

Also, code reuse is very important. There are times where a quick and dirty answer is needed to meet a deadline, but if there is the extra time, creating a slightly more elegant solution will prove essential for future projects to survive.

Another point is data mining. Many industries underestimate the importance of data mining. A simple web tracker can provide a mine full of information if only it is tracked. One such industry is the marketing industry. There is little accountibility in this industry. Most of this is due to lack of tracking the information. One of my projects provided a tracker to a company, and it was immediately apparent that the company was focusing it's efforts in the wrong market area. As soon as the changes were made, their business tripled over a month. Always look for new ways to approach data.

One final note, many developers start out wanting to target every platform and every system. This is not feasible in the real world. Usually your target demographic does not need or want this. There are certain platforms that are a must, such as IE and Mozilla/FireFox, but I have had many companies tell me that they want their employees to use one or the other. In those cases, it is easier to focus on the one platform. On the flip side, don't discount a system because of it's age. There are a suprising number of people still using IE 4. (and even a handful using IE 3 omg) I cut my support off at 4 for practical reasons, but as an example, I was working on a project about two years ago, and I had a customer complain that they couldn't access a critical part of the site, I started testing everything, and it wasn't until I found out he was still using IE 4 that the problem made sense.
Reply:An advanced web design course should be about advanced web design. Ecommerce is a topic that deserves its own class. Commerce over the internet has financial and legal considerations that deserve a full semester worth of lessons.

Part of your course should at the very least cover accessibility and ease of use; they are issues that are often overlooked. The topic has legal ramifications which Target was recently made aware of when a lawsuit against them was raised to class-action status.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21119543/

This type of lawsuit is a career killer and could have been avoided with a weeklong discussion of the topic. Despite the many critics of Internet Explorer, they were the pioneers of accessibility in the browser with the release of IE4. You can find out more about how it is implemented at the MSDN website.

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library...

XHTML has become increasingly popular and necessary for web designers and deserves a week or two on how to implement and use it.

Aside from the aforementioned topics, CSS should probably be the topic discussed most in your class.
