What education is required for web design?

What is the necessary education/degrees required for web design? I am thinking about going back to school but I also work full time. What is the easiest way to study for web design? What are companies looking for (bachelors degrees? certificates?)?

What education is required for web design?
I am a web designer/developer by trade. My answer may be much more than what you asked for but here is my answer.

There are two parts to web development. One is the designing part and the other part is development. The development part is more programming. And the designing part is more designing. Both parts require different skill sets. Think about it this way, web designers are like the interior designers of a house. They make sure things look good. The web developers are like the plumbers, electricians, and all those people who make sure that the house is actually functional (not just sit there and look pretty).

Having said all these, by web design, I don't know if you mean strictly web design or if you mean web development (or the combination of both). If you mean web development, computer science is definitely the way to go. If you mean web design, B.S. computer science may help but the graphic design route will probably weigh more than just computer science. If you do decide to go down the design route, be sure to make some samples of your work to show the employers when you go to interviews.

If you are looking for certificates, for web development, you can become a Certified ColdFusion developer, Microsoft Certified Application Developer, ...etc. For web designer, you can become a Certified PhotopShop developer, Certified Flash Developer...etc.

The easiest way would be to go to your local book stores and read up on books relating to web design/development. You can read some books to learn how to use certain software (e.g. ColdFusion, ASP .NET, PHP, Photoshop, Flash, ...etc.)

Please feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.
Reply:Check out the nearest Community College for web design course and you would know what credit level is minum required for you to join that course. Every state has diiferent standards.
Reply:You can find a career in web design with no degree, but it will be very difficult for you. Obviously, the more education you have the better your chances are. If you only have a high school diploma then that's what you have to work with but oviously you would be better off with a college diploma. You need to do a lot of research to find the company that fits your needs. You could even find a career in web design without a high school diploma but you would need a sh!tload of experience to even be considered. if you research enough and work hard enough to find what situation fits you best, you will find yourself a web design career.
Reply:try to look for computer science or Info technology major in web design. it's about 4yrs to study but you can have short courses.

Well here is a free way to make money without fronting the cost of signing up and placing your credit card. You wont make a lot of money with this site but you get paid to participate online discussions. Just make sure you have a pay pal account so you can get paid once you get the dollar mark.

Reply:the easiest way is to go for a short course on web design, no need degrees.

after that, you should get a computer, some web design programs and lots of spare time to study how others design their web sites.

besides web design, you have to be prepared to do some web programming which will add to your time in web designing.

it took me several years of free spare time to know more about these.

good luck!

Reply:Honestly, none. I know of several independants who have no formal education but a lot of trail/error in web design who charge and....make a killing! Sometimes you are good at certain trades (gardening, cooking) and although universaily we want formal education to represent status...some people are just good at what they do and thats just how it is.
Reply:yup
Reply:You dont need any formal education. All you need is the desire, take for example Joshua Davis, one of the most known and respected Graphic Designer among the Design community, although he eventually got the formal education he started from nothing with a lot of desire to succed.

You can read a little bit about his bio here:

Reply:I think most people are more interested in experience than qualifications. You can do graphic design degrees but they dont go into as much detail on web design as you'd need. You could see if there were any local courses run in your area. Other than that, get some books out and learn for yourself. If you want to end up working for a web design company, you could always just call up a couple of companies and ask them what qualifications they would want.

I have a friend who doesnt really have any qualifications, but because she has spent a couple of years learning it all for herself, she has started her own web design business designing sites for small businesses that just want a couple of pages.

Hope that helped.
